CANDIDATE OBAMA'S SPEECH MAY 19, 2008

Candidate Obama's Speech

Then Candidate Barack Obama made a speech at the Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon on May 19, 2008.  Here is a little of what Jeff Musall, a Yahoo contributor wrote about the event:

"Obama addressed the stress that current economic troubles are causing middle-class Americans and how he would tackle them. He proposed a middle class tax cut paid for by closing loopholes used by coporations to avoid taxes. He hit back at Bush and McCain for the appeasement remarks both men have made concerning Obama's position on talking to Iran. He recalled the spirit of leaders from the past like Jefferson, Roosevelt and Kennedy. Obama noted how they had "summoned the entire nation to a higher purpose" as opposed to the Republican fear tactics."

I have been unsuccessful in locating a copy of the text of that speech, but the following is a portion of it:

“We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK. That's not leadership. That's not going to happen.”

I do not believe he and his Democratic Majority Congress closed the loopholes in his first two years in office, where he could have anything from Congress he wanted.
Appeasing Iran has definitely not worked, so I guess Bush and McCain were correct in their positions.
As far as summoning "the entire nation to a higher purpose", all he had succeeded at is to divide this nation, succeeding in class warfare, and getting more Americans on food stamps than any President before him.
As for giving a care about what "other countries are going to say" about what I drive, what I eat, and what temperature my thermostat in my house is set on, other countries do not control America.  Was Candidate Obama referring to his desire for Sharia Law?  It makes me wonder.
